Determined to replace foreign-made goods with "Made in India" products, he set out to manufacture steel pipes locally. In 1964, he opened a steel pipe unit with an investment of just Rs 42,000—an ambitious project considering he had no formal engineering background. He even designed the machinery himself. This marks the birth of the Jindal Group, which would go on to become a giant in the Indian industrial landscape.

By 1969, O.P. Jindal established Jindal Strips Limited in Kolkata, further expanding his business and contributing to India’s steel industry. His foresight to make India self-reliant in steel production positioned him as a pioneer in the industry.

O.P. Jindal’s life was tragically cut short when he died in a plane crash on March 31, 2005. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Power Minister of Haryana. After his death, his wife, Savitri Jindal, and their sons took over the leadership of the Jindal Group, ensuring that his vision and values continued to guide the group’s future.

In recognition of his contribution to India’s industrial growth, O.P. Jindal was posthumously honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry in 2004. His vision, determination, and commitment to India's growth remain an inspiration to all.
